Institutional Accreditation
Accreditation is a voluntary process of rigorous analysis, conducted by external agencies that have no relation with the institution of higher education, which aims at supervising public faith regarding compliance with:
- Clarity in defining mission and goals
- Will and solvency to do what is promised
- Consistency between processes, mission and achievements
- Setting of quality standards consistent with the policy of accreditation
- Continuous improvement of processes
The following are benefits of institutional accreditation:
- Allows setting improvement plans and increasing the level of institutional competitiveness.
- Increases the chance that graduates get better jobs in their professional careers.
- Provides public assurance of professional competence of graduates, which facilitates the recognition of academic degrees, the exchange of students, faculty and graduates at national and international levels.
ACCREDITATION PROCESS STEPS
The accreditation process—which goal is to verify compliance with the standards of a quality model (according to the accreditation body) and foster a continuous improvement process—starts with a decision from the senior leadership to submit its application to the accreditation body. Steps are as follows:
- Self-assessment: The university conducts an internal self-critical analysis about its level of compliance with accreditation standards and gap identification. The applying university crafts a self-assessment report.
- External assessment: The accreditation body names a peer review team—professionals with vast experience in the assessment of compliance with the model standards and in best practices of international higher education institutions.
- Accreditation: The accreditation body makes a decision about the accreditation process based on the self-assessment and peer review report.
- Self-regulation: The continuous improvement process takes place based on the observations or recommendations of the peer reviewers.
IAC-CINDA INSTITUTIONAL ACCREDITATION MODEL
Every accreditation must be made with reference to a number of predetermined standards. IAC-CINDA standards allow assessing the quality of an institution based on the information contained in the self-assessment report, the external assessment report, and other background information provided by the institution.
INSTITUTIONAL ACCREDITATION PROCESSES
Since its foundation, our University has had a permanent interest in providing quality service. Thus, both the institution and the undergraduate programs have been assessed through various processes of self-assessment and external assessment, obtaining international accreditations and international certifications that attest to the effectiveness with which Universidad de Lima provides academic and administrative services:
- 2008: Institutional Accreditation of Universidad de Lima, granted by IAC-CINDA for three years (expires in 2011).

MAINTAINING THE ACCREDITATION
Among other duties, Universidad de Lima’s Planning and Accreditation Bureau (DPA) manages institutional and undergraduate programs accreditation processes. In this way, it prepares supporting documentation, consolidates statistics, crafts indicator reports, coordinates surveys to students, faculty, graduates, employers, and administrative staff, and organizes subjects and workshops focused on interpreting the different accreditation model standards. The latter are aimed at professors who belong to accreditation teams.
Furthermore, the DPA provides technical support to prepare self-assessment reports and coordinates activities for external review visits.
ISOTools is the tech support platform that allows collecting documentation from the quality management system, as well as monitoring improvement projects and those from the University’s Annual Development and Functioning Plan.
In order to conduct such activities, the DPA relies on a task force comprising professionals from different disciplines. Thus, it ensures that the quality standards established by accreditation models are maintained, whilst promoting teamwork and continuous improvement.
