Chess

“Chess is something more than a game. It is an intellectual diversion which has certain artistic qualities and many scientific elements. It is also a means of knitting together more firmly social and intellectual bonds.”

José Raúl Capablanca, 1921-1927 world chess champion

With these words, the legendary Cuban chess master approaches us to a definition of chess, a millenary game which has not only stood the test of time as a mankind recreational activity, but also its practice has increased so much that it currently has a World Chess Federation (FIDE) that regulates its activities at all levels worldwide: juniors, seniors, women, etc.

The advantages of practicing chess are well known because it does not only encourage the development of intellectual skills, but it is also an excellent tool for children’s academic training. It stimulates children to think from an early age, based on processes such as calculation, comparison and abstraction, which eventually will help them to make decisions, and establish mechanisms that they will use in their own daily actions.

Students will have the opportunity to continue practicing this beautiful game-science in the university environment thanks to the fact that the University encourages the participation of students in different university events such as junior tournaments, internal tournaments, among others.
